In efforts to raise awareness around ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), Major League Baseball announced June 2, 2021 as its inaugural Lou Gehrig Day.
The Reds held several pregame ceremonies and activations to honor those fighting for a cure. In a special recognition, the Reds and partners surprised Lou Gehrig Day Committee Co-Chair, Adam Wilson, with a new custom Reds-branded wheelchair. Adam, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2015, worked for several years after his diagnosis and became instrumental in getting MLB to adopt an official Lou Gehrig Day. In addition, Tucker Barnhart was nominated for the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award for his community work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
